5. Designing for Viability

Innovator Studio . DT Methods . 15 min Primer

Learn how to think about unlocking business value as a design challenge so that you can focus your creative energies on what's viable as well as what's desirable.

Activity

Before we get to ideation, consider maximizing the business impact of your design efforts. Articulate the business value that you’d expect to realize if you acted on your design challenge(s). It may be helpful to think about the business value that might be lost if nothing were done as well. Be focused here too!

If you get stuck, consider the primary ways business value is created (acquisition, retention, efficiency) and the respective strategic KPIs for each. And, reflect on the shifts in attitudes and behaviors your define statemet(s) suggest is needed. This will help you triangulate in on the business impact a new solution experience could deliver.

Resources

  • The DT Dojo Design Project MURAL (template) has key diagrams embedded within it along with instructions and an area to augment your define statements with viability dimensions.
